Andrew Farncombe

Andrew has a first class honours degree in Business specialising in Operational Research.

He began his career in the software industry with the software house, Scicon (now part of EDS) where he spent most of his time designing and writing simulations. Later he worked with Michael Jackson, the software methods guru, lecturing, coaching and consulting on methods of structured systems and software design. He then moved to GEC-Marconi where he was systems and software authority on large software-intensive systems.

He held a number of senior technical and management positions including Technical Director of one of the management companies, and in recent years worked on the distillation of systems engineering knowledge and experience for the Marconi group as a whole. This focused on the inter-relationship between technical, management and organisational aspects of large, complex systems and products, not only within the organisation, but also up and down the supply chain. The emphasis in this work was the identification of methods and processes to identify and mitigate risks early in the life-cycle when they can be tackled flexibly and efficiently.

More recently, he was Technical Director at the Command and Control Division of Ultra Electronics where he ran the business units and was responsible for product innovation.

A founder member of Incose (UK Chapter), he is visiting professor of Systems Engineering at Cranfield University.
